Our workshop is at Arundel, around twenty minutes north of Varsity Lakes on the M1. It is a straight run up the highway and most jobs are finished the same day.
Varsity Lakes is newer housing, and a lot of it has a single garage with the second car living on the driveway. That car takes UV every day of the year on the Gold Coast, and it shows up in a predictable order. The dash top goes first, then the door trims, then the clear coat starts to flatten. Tint deals with the inside of that problem and a ceramic coating deals with the outside.
Being a student and commuter suburb, plenty of cars here also spend the day at the station rather than under cover, which is the same all-day sun exposure with none of the shade.

The lakes change the microclimate more than people realise. Overnight humidity around the water keeps dew on cars for longer into the morning than it would a few kilometres inland, and a damp surface holds dust, pollen and mineral deposits against the paint instead of letting them blow off. Water spotting is the visible result, particularly on cars parked on the lakeside streets.
The second pattern comes from the student and young driver population around Bond. A lot of the cars we see from Varsity Lakes are older, previously owned and have never had paint protection of any kind. They arrive with a decade of accumulated swirl marks from supermarket car washes, and often with an old film that has purpled and started bubbling.
Removing failed old tint is a job in itself. The film separates from the adhesive, and the adhesive has to come off the glass without damaging the demister lines on the rear screen. It is slower than a fresh install and worth knowing about before you get a quote.

If the interior is what bothers you, tint first, because that is what stops the dash and trims cooking. If it is the paint going flat, start with the coating. Most people who plan to keep the car do both.
It slows it down considerably. Queensland runs a UV index of three or above all year, and that radiation works on the dash and trim every day the car is parked outside. All three of our films block effectively all of it.
A new car is the best time to do it, because the paint is already correct and does not need much preparation first. Coating over damaged paint seals the damage in, so a new car is the cheapest one to protect.

Book ahead. We work out of one workshop and we schedule the day around the jobs booked in, so turning up unannounced usually means being turned away.
Yes, and it is a common job on older cars. Failed film separates from its adhesive, so the film and the glue have to be dealt with in separate stages. The rear screen takes the most care because the demister lines sit on the inside surface and are easy to damage. It adds time to the booking, so tell us the car has existing film when you enquire.
It depends on the condition of the paint rather than the value of the car. If the clear coat is sound, correcting and coating an older car is very worthwhile because you lock in a corrected finish and stop the decline. If the clear coat is already failing, no coating will save it, and we will say so rather than take the booking.
Dew, and then minerals left behind when it dries. Near the lakes cars stay damp later into the morning, and as that moisture evaporates in the sun it concentrates whatever was dissolved in it into a ring on the panel. On a coated car those rinse off. On bare clear coat they progressively bond and eventually etch.
